film-maker).- [Fellig (Arthur)], "Weegee". Naked City, signed by Kazan on title, 1945; Weegee's People, 1946, first editions, both books have been bookmarked with torn-up sheets from an annotated screenplay of Kazan's On the Waterfront, some with Kazan's annotations, photographic illustrations and endpapers, original cloth, 8vo New York (2) *** Famous, or perhaps infamous, for his use of close-up flash photography at night, Weegee's photographs were perfect for capturing equally the seedy and the glamorous side of New York City at night and were to have a considerable impact on modern photography (for example Diane Arbus and photo-journalism in general. His first book Naked City proved a runaway success and soon had the photographer's work appearing on the pages of such august periodicals as Life and Vogue, whilst Weegee's People, which saw high society rubbing shoulders with his beloved street people, was to lead to assignments for various celebrities such as Andy Warhol JFK and Marilyn Monroe It would appear from the interleaved bookmarks and the occasional autograph notations that film-maker Elia Kazan was looking for inspiration from the pages of Weegee's photographs for On the Waterfront. Examples include a picture of a woman in gown & jewellery facing a picture of a man in suit & bowtie stroking a pig, with Kazan's inserted autograph note reading "Party / Raffle a Pig / or a Turkey. also an ugly woman overdressed"; a group of people carrying mannequins with accompanying note "Raffle a dress - a hood takes the dress off a dummy", and an image of a 'madman' wearing glasses: "Mutt [a character in On the Waterfront] - give him glasses", the latter note also with autograph comments on the script itself, "This is the Big Sc[ene] The Big Confrontation" and on the verso, referring to the Terry character played by Marlon Brando, "They let him down. Then he starts crying: this is the only time in the Pic he cries."
