Film Stars And Entertainers - 1920s-1960s A collection of autographed photographs and letters, comprising: - an autograph letter, signed, on Noel Coward headed stationery, dated 11 October, 1942, from Noel Coward to a Miss Stuart-Shepherd, thanking her for her letter and her comments regarding Coward's play In Which We Serve , with a postscript added in Coward's hand in blue ink: You were quite right about the prayer. The words are so beautiful that I wanted to say them slowly but I have so often heard them spoken on board ship that I knew it was necessary, in order to give the right impression, to read them with the same speed and familiarity as those who do it every Sunday of their lives , 1p., in common mount with a souvenir programme for In Which We Serve , Gaumont Theatre, London, and a black and white machine-print photograph of Noel Coward as Captain Kinross, overall measurements -- 20¼x19in. (51.4x48.2cm.) framed; a hand-written letter on S.S. United States headed stationery, [n.d.], from Joan Crawford to the ship's Captain, thanking him for his invitation and giving her apologies for not being able to attend: I'm so sorry I couldn't make it but was sea sick, took some pills and slept right through your party. Do forgive me and it's good to be aboard... , 1p., with corresponding envelope addressed in Crawford's hand; an S.S. Leviathan black and white souvenir log card, 1924, printed on the reverse with details of voyage, signed on the front in black ink by Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks and Gloria Swanson -- 4¼x6in. (10.8x15.2cm.) ; a black and white photograph of Bette Davis taken on board R.M.S. Queen Mary, circa 1950s, signed in blue ballpoint pen by subject -- 6¾x4¾in. (17.1x12.1cm.) ; a black and white photograph taken on board R.M.S. Queen Elizabeth, signed in blue ballpoint pen by Norma Shearer, Patricia Knight, Coral Wilde and one other -- 4¾x6½in.
