first edition, lithographed title with vignette of tunnel, lithographed map and plate, both folding, advertisement leaf at end, occasional light spotting, plates torn and neatly repaired, original cloth, rubbed, corners and spine ends a little worn, recased, [Ottley 1933], E. & F.N.Spon, 1861; and a folding prospectus for the work containing calculations of possible revenue and cost by the author (with a few small holes), 8vo & 4to (2) *** Serious proposals for a fixed cross-Channel communication were first broached at the end of the 18th century but were deferred because of the Napoleonic wars. Several different proposals were made throughout the remainder of the 19th century for tunnels, submerged tubes, an isthmus made up of concrete blocks and a train ferry. Chalmers' childhood home was "at the end of 'the great tubular bridge of Canada'" the construction of which he was able to observe. Influenced by this, he conceived "the idea of a Submarine Tunnel at the Straits of Dover" and in this book describes and illustrates his first proposal, which was a single-tubed tunnel with with two tracks and three ventilation shafts to be laid on the sea floor and protected by an overlaying embankment.
