Werner-Otto-von Hentig and Oskar Ritter von Niedermayer led the secret diplomatic mission to Kabul in 1915. According to correspondence loosely inserted and various notes by Hopkirk in the books, von Hentig's younger brother, Hans, later a criminologist, "commanded the machine-gun unit whose courage Lawrence immortalized in 'Seven Pillars of Wisdom', p.653/5".
