Five letters signed ('C.L. Eastlake') to the Secretary of the Society of Arts Peter Le Neve-Foster-In the first letter Eastlake writes that he will not be able to attend the annual seminar of the Society due to a different engagement, 15 June 1858. In another letter he mentions a meeting between Eastlake and Mr Keppel Heselinck, to whom the painter explains that "The Delft professor has misinformed him altogether in saying that the 'Academy of Art' wished to have copies from Dutch pictures". Eastlake then writes that "after some explanations it appeared that it was the 'Society of Arts' that was meant. it seems rather strange than a gentleman should take the trouble of coming to England supposing himself to be invited, to find that there is no foundation whatever made to him by his countryman. When he enquired about the National Gallery and the Royal Academy, I told him as plainly as I could that no such copies were wanted by either institution...As regards to the copies...what the poor man is to do with them here it would be difficult to say. I have advised the friend to speak to Mr Colnaghi and see whether one of the copies could be exhibited there", 1 February 1860. In the latest letter Eastlake writes about the Committee appointed to "investigate the causes of the decay of some of the frescoes in the Palace at Westminster", 14 November 1863; six pages, mailing folds, light yellowing, 8vo, Fitzroy Square, London, 15 June 1858- 14 November 1863 (4) Provenance: the descendants of Samuel Davenport who was Financial Officer of the Society of Arts from 1844 to 1876.
