Manuscript entitled 'Tracé Descriptif des divers objets d'Habillement, d'Equipement, et Harnachem[en]t a l'usage de l'armé française en 1828 executé d'apres les ordres de S[on] E[xcellence] M[onsieur] le Vicomte de Caux, Ministre de la Guerre Armée de Ligne', a military tailor's pattern book prepared for publication, titles and descriptions written in a small and neat scribal hand in brown ink, uniforms and equipment depicted in black ink (after de Retz), two plates including illustrations in ink and watercolour, including title page and table of contents, altogether 26 pages (of which 21 with illustrations), folio (435 x 235 mm - 440 x 235 mm) , (a few light spots, small tears in margins of 2 leaves, slightly browned in outer margins); bound in contemporary green boards, small label numbered '39' on spine (worn at edges, splitting in extremities); Provenance : Mark Dineley (bookplate) [and:] BOTTET, Captain Maurice (fl. 1902). Two manuscripts describing weapons, the first, 'Armes Blanches des Armées Françaises 1778 - 1870' n.p. [Paris], n.d. (circa 1900], the text written in black ink, approximately 91 pages, folio , and illustrations of swords and sabres, in pencil, approximately 41 pages, folio , and 16 pages of printed illustrations by A.L. Lacault (one note on paper with printed heading of the Exposition Universelle of 1900), tipped on guards or mounted on the leaves of an album, mottled brown calf gilt, spine in compartments, black morocco lettering pieces on spine and upper cover, folio; the second, 'Monographie de l'arme a feu portative', comprising drawings, in pencil and one page in pen and ink, of bayonets, musquets, rifles, and pistols, approximately 12 pages, 4to and a list of captions, approximately 2½ pages, 4to , tipped on guards into an album, mottled brown calf gilt. The first manuscript gives very precise instructions, measurements and patterns for military garments and accoutrements, including coats, waistcoats, trousers, headgear ('Schakos des troupes a pied', 'Bonnet d'oursin de sapeurs'); 'Objets de passementerie a l'usage de l'armée de ligne', with designs for epaulettes, aigrettes, and pompons; the cords for the cavalry's shakos, belts for hussars; saddlery, sheaths etc for sabres and swords, drum-cases, drumskins and straps; chemises and gaiters; shoes; coats for bandsmen and drummers; uniform for medical officers; gloves, epaulettes for officers for all ranks (a footnote reading 'Decision Ministerielle du 12 mai 1828') and articles of harness. Louis-Victor-de Caux de Lacquetot (1775-1845) who commissioned it was appointed Field Marshal in charge of military administration at the Bourbon restoration. The manuals by Maurice Bottet, 'Membre du comité de perfectionnement du musée de l'arméee et de la sabretache', were intended for publication and were issued in Paris (1959). (2)
