FRANÇOIS BOUCHER, A YOUNG WOMAN WITH TWO CHILDREN AND A CAT, BLACK AND RED CHALK, PASTEL, ON BROWN PAPER
Boucher’s talent as a pastellist was recognised by his contemporaries, from Bergeret to Jean de Jullienne who collected above all the very accomplished heads of women from his mature period (F. Joulie, Esquisses, pastels et dessins de François Boucher dans les collections privées, exhib. cat., Versailles, Musée Lambinet, 2004, p. 76). Overall compositions worked out in pastel such as the present drawing are rarer, but here the technique adopted is actually that of a work aux trois crayons. Stylistically, Alastair Laing compares this pastel to a pair in the same technique in the Albertina in Vienna, The Schoolmaster and The Schoolmistress (inv. 12163, 12162). The brown paper is lightly touched with pastel, but mostly covered with black, red and white chalks, and heightened with blue.
Alastair Laing also states that a version in reverse is a copy derived from the present pastel (A. Ananoff, L’Œuvre dessiné de François Boucher Paris, 1966, I, no. 261, fig. 48).
