FRANS BALTHAZAR SOLVYNS (1760-1824) The Costume of Hindostan . London: J. Hayes for Edward Orme 1807 [plates watermarked 1816]. 2° (356 x 257mm). Text in English and French. 60 hand-coloured line- or stipple-engraved or etched plates by Scott or T. Vivares after Solvyns. (Short repaired tear to English title, tiny marginal hole to pl. 11, occasional spotting, browning and offsetting.) Contemporary calf, covers with wide border in blind and gilt, gilt edges (rebacked preserving original spine, corners strengthened, rubbed). Provenance : Carnegie (ink inscription dated 1819 to title) -- Lady Fynte (19th-century engraved armorial bookplate to rear pastedown). First published in parts with an undated title page, and followed by editions in 1804 and 1807; however, the popularity of the work ensured that it stayed in print for many years after these dates. It was based on Solvyn's earlier work containing 250 plates, The Manners, Customs and Dresses of the Hindoos , published at Calcutta in 1799. Abbey Travel 429; Colas 2766; Lipperheide Ld9: cf. Brunet V, 433 (note); Tooley 461; Vinet 2350.
