Frederic Remington (American, 1861-1909) The Sergeant, 1904 Signed "Frederic Remington" in the bronze at the top edge of the proper right side of the base, inscribed "Copyright by/Frederic Remington" at the top edge of the left side of the base and continuing onto the back, stamped "ROMAN BRONZE WORKS" at the bottom edge of the back of the base. Bronze with dark brown patina, height 10 1/4 in. (26.0 cm), artist's base approximately 2 5/8 x 2 5/8 x 3 1/2 in. (6.7 x 6.7 x 9.0 cm). Condition: Mild wear to patina, dust and dirt to interstices. Provenance: Purchased from the artist by Edwin McClellan, by family descent to the current owners. N.B. (1) A Yale College graduate, McClellan was a humanitarian and philanthropist who amassed a fortune with the pharmaceutical firm Foster-Milburn Company in Buffalo, New York. He and Frederic Remington were friends at Yale. Edwin McClellan acquired a number of Remington works, including a very early edition (#7) of The Bronco Buster that was sold at auction in 2008. 1.
