In 1922 Rolls-Royce introduced a smaller and slightly less powerful model, the 20, to be offered alongside the Silver Ghost. Built to the highest of Rolls-Royce engineering standards, it was quiet, reliable and luxurious. Replaced in 1929 by the more powerful 20/25, and then again in 1936 yet more powerful 25/30, with a further increase in engine size. Powered by a 4.3 liter overhead valve six cylinder engine, the 25/30 chassis was a popular alternative to the larger Phantom series of cars. 1,201 25/30 chassis were produced during the brief two-year model run, before the model was replaced in 1939 by the Wraith. Henry Royce's pursuit for perfection had precluded the use of proprietary parts in the past, but following his death in 1933 their use became more widespread. The 20/25 and 25/30 used parts manufactured by others, including a Stromberg carburetor, SU fuel pumps, Lucas electrics, etc., and this factor enabled Rolls-Royce to limit the rising costs of manufacture. Until that time Rolls-Royce was about the only car company in the world to manufacture its own electrical equipment.
