Original watercolor, John Beardmore's Collection of Armor in the Dining Hall of Uplands, Fareham, Hampshire, with pencil, touches of white, and gum arabic, 234 x 333 mm, signed and dated "Edwin Fudge 1845." Matted and framed. Provenance: Capt. G.C. Miller, sold at Christie's, Nov 17, 1994, lot 18. Exhibited: London, Royal Academy, 1845, no 1107. Another version of this drawing was published in Beardmore's A Catalogue with Illustrations of the Collection of Ancient Arms and Armour, at Uplands, near Fareham, 1844, as plate 2. Collecting arms was quite popular at the time. Horace Walpole decorated the stairway at Strawberry Hill with armor and many others were similarly inspired, perhaps by Samuel Rush Meyrick's publication of his collection in the 1820s. Beardmore's armory was one of the most notable of this era; it comprised over 200 lots at Christie's in 1921.
