FUTURISM]. DEPERO, FORTUNATO. Depero Futurista. Milan, New York, Paris, Berlin: Editioni Italiani Dinamo Azari 1927. Oblong format, in sheets, flexible printed paper boards, stab-stitched and held together with two pairs of large metal nuts and bolts, a few small stains, corners slightly bumped, small light dampstain to upper blank margins of most leaves, some very faint discoloration to extreme outer margins . FIRST EDITION, limited to 1000 copies, this no. 223, signed by Depero and the editor Fedele Azari on verso of title, with presentation inscription from the latter "Al Com ai Nicaletti," dated 28/9/32. 116 unnumbered leaves (2 blank), 2 folding, printed on various papers of which some colored, most printed on rectos only, including 28 halftone plates of which 2 in color, numerous line block illustrations in the text, typographic designs throughout, many printed in red and black. The "bolted book" is an important anthology of work by the Futurist designer Depero, reproducing his theatrical and commercial designs from the period 1913-1927, including several of his designs for Campari advertisements. Although the limitation statement calls for 1000 copies, it is probable that the entire edition was never completely published. The "preface" on fol. [5]r states that "this book is Mechanical, bolted like a motor, Dangerous, can constitute a projectile weapon, Inclassifiable, cannot fit into a library with the other volumes. And therefore it is in its exterior form Original, Invasive, and Assailing, like Depero and his art." Fol. [8]r-v contains a list of names of members of the futurist movement, classified as "Poeti--Paroliberi--Propagandisti Futuristi," "Musicisti e Rumoristi," "Teatristi," "Tipografi," etc., including Marinetti (the "Motor of the Futurist movement") , Mazza, Sanzin, Prampolini, Tato, Russolo, et al. Salaris, Bibliografia del Futurismo , p. 35 (calling for 120 leaves, including printed covers and endpapers); MOMA/Jentsch 177 ("one of the avant-garde masterpieces in the history of the book-object").
