Gallantry. A Great War MC group to Captain P.J. Miller Royal Engineers, later Chinese Labour Corps and late North China British Volunteers at the Peking Legations. Military Cross, G.V.R., unnamed as issued in case of issue, British War and Victory Medals (Capt. P.J. Miller ), good very fine, sold with copied research. MC London Gazette 9.1.1918 T./2nd Lt. Percy. J. Miller R.E.’For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He laid a tape from the front line to a crater held by the enemy, in the face of heavy machine gun and rifle fire from the flank, and although told that he could return immediately after the working party had commenced, insisted on remaining until the task was complete and communication completely established. His personal initiative and courageous example turned a most valuable post which would otherwise have been entirely isolated, into a very strong defensive position.’ Captain Percy John Miller born in Berkhamstead, 1880, educated at Berkhamstead School, he later trained as an engineer gaining a position with H.M. Office of Works Engineering Department in the Drawing Office from 1902-1913, during this time he designed many extensive steam and other plants, he was then transferred to H.B.M. Office of Works at the British Legation of Peking from May 1913 where he supervised the erection and maintenance of electrical generating, steam power, and pumping plant. At the outbreak of WWI Miller was residing in China working as an engineer, as such he joined the North China British Volunteers at Peking from November 1914 being involved in Legation defence purposes with the Machine Gun Section, but then resigned in 1915 to come to England, and on his arrival enlisted into the British Army Territorial Force in 1916 as Private (9281). After completing his training he obtained a position with the Newark Engineers being commission as a 2nd Lieutenant with the Royal Engineers, he served on the Western Front from 3 June 1916 being promoted to Lieutenant. Miller was transferred to the Chinese Labour Corps in 1918, serving with various units until he relinquished his commission in 1918 but retained his rank as Captain until 1920. (3)
