Fine condition. Provenance Private collection, North London; acquired in the early 1980s. Footnotes The head is that of one of the disciples of the Buddha and came from a scene depicting the Paranirvana, or death, of the Buddha. When the Buddha was eighty, he died near the city of Kushinagara, breaking free of the cycle of rebirth and reaching nirvana. This panel, which would have been set into the harmika at the top of a stupa, or relic mound, and would have shown the Buddha surrounded by lay and monastic mourners in various states of grief.
