Text complete, with irregular pagination. (Closed tear at p. 81/82, lacks final blank.) 17th-century calf, covers double-gilt ruled, fully gilt panelled spine, modern red calf lettering piece (skillfully re-laid, corners renewed). Provenance : early ecclesiastical library inkstamp on p.1. FIRST FRENCH EDITION , translated by Jean Baudouin, of the Primera parte de los Commentarios Reales , first published in folio, in Spanish, Lisbon 1608/1609. This part I covers Inca life and the social and economic system of early Peru, written by the Cuzco-born son of a Spanish conquistador and a Peruvian noblewoman, as related to him by his mother’s family and from the works of Blas Valera, Peurvian-born Jesuit. Part II, on the Spanish conquest of Peru, was first published in folio, Cordoba 1617. Vega’s contribution to early Inca history is unequaled.
