GARDINER, ALAN H. 1879-1963. The Temple of King Sethos I at Abydos. London and Chicago: Egypt Exploration Society and the University of Chicago Press, 1933-1958. 4 volumes. Large folio (595 x 470 mm). Half-titles, 4 frontispieces, and 249 lithographic and chromolithographic plates, after drawings by Amice Calverley and Myrtle Broome. Publisher's beige cloth, with gilt device on upper covers, slightly faded, a few corners bumped. A monumental work on the Temple complex of King Sethos I at Abydos in Egypt, published over 25 years, based on the very accurate drawings by the Egyptologists Amice M. Calverley (1896-1959) and and Myrtle F. Broome (1888-1978). In the season of I925-1926 the Egypt Exploration Society, after excavating for some years exclusively at el-Amarna, decided to transfer its activities to Abydos, where the uncovering of the chapel of Osiris (the Osirion), which had been interrupted by World War I, urgently needed the completion of the excavations. During a visit to the site by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. and James Henry Breasted, in the early 1930s, Rockefeller was taken by the beauty of the painted reliefs, as well as the excellence of Ms. Calverley's drawings. He then decided to finance the publication of this lavish four volume set, a justifiable expense to celebrate the beauty of this temple.
