GARNIER, Charles (1825-98) Le nouvel Opéra de Paris . Paris, 1880. First edition of these monumental views of the Opera de Paris. 2 volumes of lithographs (only), folio (620 x 443 mm). Half-title to plate list in each volume printed in red, titles printed in red and black, lithographic portrait of Garnier on india paper mounted, signed in facsimile, 75 lithographic and chromolithographic plates (numbered 1-40 and 1-60, 5 double-page and 20 chromolithographed plates printed in color and heightened with gold) of elevations, sections, plans and details by Penel, Sergent, Bordet, Martel, Sellier, Chappuis, Bruck and others after Duchampt, Rebout, Riquois, Bernard, Jasson and others (without the 2 8vo text vols. and Durandelle's photographs, spotted, a few short tears, plate 31 splitting along plate margin). Contemporary half morocco, covers gilt lettered (some rubbing and minor wear to edges). A relative unknown Garnier won the competition to build the Opera in 1861 as an expression of the wealth and power of Napoleon III's Second Empire. Construction commenced immediately, employing over 90 painters and sculptors for its lavish decorative program alone, and it was completed -- under the Third Republic -- in 1875.
