(Title somewhat soiled and repaired at gutter, some soiling and dampstaining throughout, mainly to margins, small hole to engraved plate not affecting image, some repairs to pages 51, 53 and 55, library markings). Contemporary morocco-backed marbled boards. (Head and tail of spine repaired). FIRST EDITION of one of the most important works written on the orbits of the planets since Newton's Principia . It expounds the method of orbit calculation using "least squares" which Gauss had developed in 1801. Honeyman 1451; Norman 879; Sparrow Milestones of Science 81.
