Author: Morse, Jedidiah Place: New-Haven Publisher: Printed by Meigs, Bowen and Dana Date: [1784] Description: 214, [1] pp. (12mo) 15.6x9 cm (6¼x3½"), period calf, later(?) morocco spine label. First Edition. Very rare first edition of the first American geography and the first to describe the Western country, including California. This copy is incomplete: lacking the half-title, the two engraved maps, and pages 11-14 and 23-24. The first four missing pages discuss globes and geography in general, the other two are the first two pages on the United States in general. Howes M-842. Provenance: Warren Heckrotte collection. Lot Amendments Condition: Covers worn, top 1½" of spine strip lacking; missing the front free endpaper and half of the rear free endpaper, a few signatures coming loose; browning to contents, some marginal worming, good, a rare and significant book.
