GEOLOGICAL LAPIS LAZULI PYRAMID AND TIGER-IRON SPHERE A pyramid cut from fine lapis lazuli with pyrites and a sphere of excellent tiger-iron. 65 grams (pyramid), 283 grams (sphere), 3.5 cm (pyramid), 5.4 cm (sphere diameter) (1 1/2" (pyramid), 2 1/8" (sphere)). Very fine condition. Good pyrite in the lapis lazuli; good patterning in the tiger-iron. [2, No Reserve] Provenance Ex Douglas Rose collection. Footnotes Tiger iron is an altered rock composed chiefly of tiger's eye, red jasper, and black hematite. The undulating, contrasting bands of color and luster make for an attractive motif, and it is mainly used for jewelery-making and ornamentation and is a popular ornamental material used in a variety of applications; from beads to knife hilts. Tiger iron is mined primarily in South Africa and Western Australia.
