The flower painter, Valentine Bartholomew was a member of the old Water Colour Society from 1835 until his death in 1879. He was for many years flower painter in ordinary to the Duchess of Kent and later to Queen Victoria. George Baxter obtained his patent on 23 October 1835 for "reproducing paintings in colour by means of printing by letterpress in oil inks from a succession of wood or metal relief blocks on a key printed either from a copper or steel plate or lithographic stone or zinc plate."
