'AN EARLY AND IMPORTANT COLLECTED EDITION OF COOK'S THREE VOYAGES' ( Hawaiian National Bibliography ), which was intended to provide a complete set of Cook's Voyages at the economical price of 80 parts at 6 d . each, in contradistinction to 'some other editions of these works (unnecessarily extended to many volumes by loose printing, blank paper, and other artifices practised by mercenary persons) [which] would cost a purchaser the enormous sum of upwards of twenty guineas' (title). The work also contains the Voyages of John Byron, Samuel Wallis, Philip Cartaret, Lord Mulgrave, Lord Anson and Sir Francis Drake, of which 'Anderson sometimes gives the original accounts, others are abridged or edited versions, and frequently additional materials from other sources are added to give scope and depth to the narratives' (Hill). This copy is from the library of Dr Wallace Wilson and his wife, the Canadian writer Ethel Wilson (1888-1980), Officer of the Order of Canada and recipient of Canada Council Medal and the Lorne Pierce Medal of the Royal Society of Canada.
