GEORGIA O'KEEFFE AN ALBUM OF PHOTOGRAPHS OF GHOST RANCH. CIRCA 1940S 35 olive-drab construction paper sheets (12 x 9 in.) with 87 gelatin silver prints that have been ferrotyped (size varies, most 4 1/4 x 3 1/4 in.) mounted as montages with black ink borders; edges of leaves slightly faded. Thick black flexible paper boards, stabbed and tied with yellow ribbon, black paper label lettered "Ghost Ranch" and with image of a steer's skull on upper cover; minor wear Life at Ghost Ranch. Georgia O'Keeffe first visited Ghost Ranch in northern New Mexico in 1934. In 1940, she bought a house and seven acres there. She spent a portion of each year there from that time forward. Although O'Keeffe appears in a few of these photos, the majority of them were taken by her, according to Juan Hamilton. The photos record the house at Ghost Ranch, the breathtaking landscape surrounding the ranch, ranch hands (individual portraits and a group enjoying a meal under a tree), dogs, horses, donkeys, the garden with blossoming apple(?) trees, and workers making repairs and improvements to the house. There are also three studies of the shadows made by ranch hands on horseback and sitting on fences. An extraordinary look at Ghost Ranch through the eyes of its owner. PROVENANCE:The artistBy descent to the present ownerCondition ReportTo request a condition report for this lot, please contact books@sothebys.com.
