A fine photograph album assembled by Canadian-born miniature portrait artist, Gerald Sinclair Hayward including approximately 500 photographs of varying sizes, including many images of the Hayward Family and their friends in the U.S., Canada, and England, shots of Hayward's miniature portraits on exhibit, pictures of his patrons, and photographs of different hunting and fishing expeditions to the Rockies. Most of the photos are accompanied by handwritten captions. Gerald Sinclair Hayward (1845-1926) was born in Port Hope, Ontario, but moved to New York at a young age. He spent the majority of his professional career in New York, but also worked in London, England between 1879-1883. He painted many notable figures in the U.S., Britain, Germany, and Russia. Hayward's miniature works can be found in various public institutions, including the Smithsonian American Art Collection, Washington, D.C. Some of the most interesting photographs in the album document three hunting and fishing expeditions that Hayward made to the Colorado Rockies between 1889 and 1893, including some great views of the artist and his friends traveling by foot, by horseback, and by stagecoach, set up at camp, fishing, cleaning their rifles, and posing with their trophies of chase, which includes elk, mountain sheep, buffalo, grouse, etc. In addition, the album features portraits of American Indians, including a photo originally taken by L.A. Huffman of Hunkpapa Sioux Chief Spotted Eagle, an image of a young female identified as Arapahoe Belle, snapshots of Indians captioned Song Bow at Fort Washakie, Big Conundrum, and Brother-in-Law to Chief Washakie plus an image of an Indian grave with a Sharps Sporting Rifle leaning against it. This portion of the album also includes some interior views of what is presumably Hayward's studio, which is adorned with a combination of miniature portraits, animal skins, mounted animal heads, and weapons. One of the best images captures Hayward dressed in a grass suit, ready for duck shooting. The album also includes the following highlights: a self-portrait sketched and signed in pencil by Hayward, dated 1875; a family portrait of Hayward with his wife, 2 sons, 1 daughter, and her husband; some views of Cooperstown, NY, and Lake Otsego; portraits of some of Hayward's patrons, including actress Kate Claxton, Field Marshals Garnet Wolseley and Frederick Sleigh Roberts, among many others; photo of a young William Randolph Hearst; portrait of Dr. William Francis Norman O'Loughlin, who worked aboard the Titanic and went down with the ship; some photographs of Hayward's miniature portraits on display at Avery's Galleries, Fifth Avenue, New York, with a pamphlet for the exhibition; plus various photos of the Hayward family, including some snapshots of the artist dressed in fireman's attire, with fire trumpet in hand, captioned Asst. Foreman, Hose Co. No. 1. This album provides photographic evidence that Hayward was not just a successful miniature portrait artist, but a man of many talents. Condition: Album has no protective cover; even toning to most photographs; some photos have detached from pages.
