He was a pupil of Abraham Bloemaert Honthorst visited Italy from 1616 until 1620, where he copied the naturalism and eccentricities of Michelangelo da Caravaggio. He set up a school in Utrecht together with his colleague Hendrick ter Brugghen and represented the so-called Dutch Caravaggisti. His time not consumed in producing pictures was devoted to portraits.
