Beschreibung:

Gerichtsordnung im Fürstenthumb Obern- und Nidern Bayern Anno 1520 aufgericht . Munich: [Johann Schobser, after 23 April 1520].
Gerichtsordnung im Fürstenthumb Obern- und Nidern Bayern Anno 1520 aufgericht . Munich: [Johann Schobser, after 23 April 1520]. 2° (307 x 214mm). PRINTED ON VELLUM in red and black. With final blank and without blank B8. Xylographic title with large woodcut by Caspar Clofigl of Dukes Wilhelm IV and Ludwig X seated at a table. 18th-century calf over (original?) bevelled wooden boards, panelled in gilt with mottled outer border and arms of Max, comte de Preysing at centre, gilt spine and edges, two fore-edge clasps (a few minor scuff marks). Provenance : occasional early pen-work flourishes, including to title, some annotations in several early hands -- Max, comte de Preysing (binding) -- Charles Fairfax Murray (Davies 51; sale Christie's, 10 December 1917, lot 57, £34 to Tregaskis) -- Hans Furstenberg (leather booklabel). FIRST EDITION. The Gerichtsordnung codified legal procedures, concepts and practices in Bavaria. It aimed to order, elucidate and expand, rather than revolutionise, current law, and it remained the foundation of legal codification into the 17th century. The title woodcut, unique to this edition, depicts the brother Dukes of Bavaria at a table surrounded by an audience drawn from all levels of society. It is the work of Caspar Clofigl, a Munich artist who served as court-painter to Duke William IV from about 1516 to 1529 (Hollstein V p.195, Clofigl 4). Davies, Murray German 51; Dodgson II, pp. 266-267; Schottenloher, Schobser 171; Van Praet, Bib. nat. , I, p.240; VD-16 B-989.
