Zweite Ausgabe (EA 1524) der seltenen und prachtvoll gedruckten Abhandlung zur Orthographie der italienischen Sprache. - Nach dem Vorbild der griechischen Sprache als attische Koine hatte der Dichter und Sprachforscher Trissino (1478-1550) auf der Grundlage verschiedener Dialekte eine italienische Gemeinschaftssprache entwickelt, für die er in den vorliegenden "Briefen" an Clemens VII. eine strikte phonetische Orthographie verwendet. So entlehnt er dem Griechischen beispielsweise die Schriftzeichen für das Epsilon und Omega, um das offene und das geschlossene "e" und "o" zu unterscheiden. Die eigenwillige und kunstvolle Typographie hierfür schuf der berühmte Kalligraph und Drucker Lodovico degli Arrighi , dessen an Kanzleischrift erinnernde Kursive von modernen Schriftkünstlern und Typographen wiederaufgegriffen wurde. - Tls. minim. fleckig, Titel mit schmalem Eckabschnitt. Trissino was one of the central figures in the battle over linguistic reform, that took place in italy during the 1520s and 1530s. In these "Epistola" he proposes the introduction of new letters into alphabet to represent sounds in the Italian language which were undistinguished in the present alphabet. - With large woodcut printer's device on title. Mod. calf with blindtooled fillet borders. - Here and there minim. staining, title with tiny cut-off at upper corner. Else fine copy on strong paper with broad margins. Bookplate W. R. H. Jeudwine.
