Group of 3 black and white photographs, approximately 4½ x 6½ inches, plus one photo postcard. Two of the photographs with ink stamps on verso of Rol. Curtiss won the first international air race, held on the Betheny plain in Reims. He completed the 12-mile circuit in just under 16 minutes, at an average speed of 47.65 mph in his 50hp Curtiss biplane, the Golden Flyer. He took home the Gordon Bennett Cup for this achievement. The Wright brothers were too busy selling their planes in Germany to attend, although two of their aircraft competed without success. Comprising: Curtiss aloft, seen from almost directly below; taxiing with Curtiss at the controls; French President Fallières visiting Curtiss' hangar; postcard SIGNED by GLENN CURTISS, showing him on the first day of the contest with his team, working on the plane, postmarked at Betheny on August 28, 1909 (the last day of the competition).
