GMELIN, Johann Georg (1709-55). Voyage en Sibérie. Translated from German into French by de Keralio. Paris: Desaint, 1767. 2 volumes, 12 o (165 x 99 mm). One engraved plate, and one engraved folding plate of music. Contemporary calf, spine gilt (light wear to spine ends and joints). Provenance : Ormathwaite (bookplate). FIRST EDITION IN FRENCH, translated from the German edition of 1751-52. "One of the earliest accounts of Bering's voyage to the Northwest mainland" (Howes). From 1733-1743 Gremlin traveled to Eastern Siberia, as part of the imperial Russian scientific expedition, which included the German geographer Gerhard Friedrich Müller and the French astronomer Louis Delisle. "Although this work does not contain any material by Gmelin on Alaska proper, it is replete with information on the preparations for Bering's final sea voyage. Gmelin is also responsible for the first comprehensive flora of Siberia, Flora sibirica sive historia plantarum sibiriae, St. Petersburg, 1747-69. Cox I:351; Howes G-212; Lada-Mocarski 5 (German edition); Wickersham 6103. (2)
