GOOS, Pieter (c.1616-1675 ). De Zee-Atlas Ofte Water-Wereld, Waer in vertoont werden all de Zee-Kusten Van hetbekende des. Aerd-Bodems. Seer dienstigh voor alle Heeren en Kooplieden, Also oock voor all Schippers en Stuurlieden . Amsterdam: Pieter Goos, 1668 [some maps dated 1669]. 2° (513 x 318mm). Hand-coloured engraved frontispiece by P. Schenk after G. van Houten, 16 pages of text in Dutch, including index of 40 charts, 39 (of 41) double-page engraved charts called for by Koeman, but with an untitled chart of the English Channel showing the Dover Straits not called for by Koeman, ALL HAND-COLOURED IN OUTLINE AND HEIGHTENED IN GOLD THROUGHOUT BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND , all mounted on guards. (Without the 2pp. dedication, lacking the world map, and that of the western Mediterranean, 'Pascaarte vande Zuyder-Zee' without the additional folding strip of the southern shore of the Zuyderzee, light browning and offsetting, some worming and short tears mainly confined to margins, a couple of tiny wormholes to title, two maps with short crude tape repairs at foot of gutter.) Late 19th-century black half-morocco over decorative paper covered boards, marbled endpapers (extremities rubbed). ILLUMINATED, HAND-COLOURED COPY OF THE ZEEATLAS - A UNIQUE COMPILATION OF CHARTS ENTIRELY BY GOOS , including 11 charts of the Americas. This copy conforms to Koeman, with the exception that his map no.3, 'Pascaart van de Noort Zee', is dated 1669 in the present copy, and not 1668. The American maps are particularly desirable: Koeman's no. 32, 'Pascaert vande Vlaemsche ... Eylanden', showing the Caribbean and the eastern seaboards of North and South America, has been extensively reworked, with Cape Cod and the St Lawrence River moved westwards (Burden 390, state 2); the map showing California as an island, 'Paskaerte van Nova Granada en t'Eylandt California' (Koeman no. 40), is one of 'the first folio maps devoted to this curious cartographic phenomenon' (Burden 391). Four of the maps have additional decorative compass roses added to them in this edition. The text includes a short history of the origin and growth of Navigation. Koeman IV, Goos 5A.
