Title: Governor’s Message and Reports of the Public Officers of the State…of Virginia Author: Wise, Henry A. Place: Richmond, VA Publisher: William F. Ritchie, Public Printer Date: 1859 Description: Doc. No. 1. 48 pp. (8vo) light green wrappers, printed in black. Soon to become a Confederate General during the Civil War, Wise devotes 20 pages of this report to fiery abolitionist John Brown’s ill-fated attack on Harper’s Ferry and its suppression - from the southern slaveholders’ perspective. After Brown’s trial and conviction, Wise signed the order for his execution, but then, as he writes here, ordered Brown’s body released to his widow “with dignity and decency”. Lot Amendments Condition: Ex-library copy from the New Hampshire State Library with rubberstamp, pencil notes, plus light soiling to wrappers; very good. Item number: 241874
