GRANDS-ECHEZEAUX Further to the north we find Grands-Echézeaux, the Domaines owns over a third of the total vineyard, 3.53 hectares. Often considered to be a better wine then the neighboring Echézeaux, this wine has great structure and needs time to fully evolve. The average age of the vines is 45 years, the Domaine produces an average of 11 500 bottles per annum. Grands-Echézeaux--Vintage 1971 Côte de Nuits, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Lot 71 level: 3.5cm. Lot 72 levels: 2cm ...Most recently a magnum at Wilf Jaeger's DRC tasting: brownish, mature rim; very sweet, fully ripe 'boiled beetroot' nose of great depth and which held magnificently (though one distinguished guest described the bouquet as 'dying flowers'-as a result of the hail). Sweet entry, lovely flavour but a fairly swingeingly dry finish. March 2002 **** MB, Vintage Wine 2 bottles per lot
