GREEK ATTIC BLACK-FIGURE MASTOID CUP BY THE CAYLUS PAINTER 5th century BC An Attic black-figure mastoid cup by the Caylus painter, both sides decorated with a winged goddess flanked by youths sitting on blocks or folding chairs; the winged females with white skin and eyes in applied red; some figures with red diadems, youths wearing cloaks with red bordures and white triple dots, two also clad in himatia (mantles) rendered with large white blobs; leafless branches and grapes in the field, single ivy leaves below the handles. 125 grams, 16.5cm (6 1/2"). Condition Fine condition; restored. Provenance Property of a Swiss collector; formerly in a private collection formed in the 1990s. Literature For almost identical youths cf. the kyathos CVA Tarquinia, Museo Nazionale 2, III.H.12, pl.(1190) 41.5.
