Beschreibung:

Parrots in Captivity. London: George Bell and Sons, 1884-1887. 3 volumes. 80 (of 81) color-printed wood-engraved plates after A. F. Lydon by B. Fawcett. 8vo (245 x 162 mm). Period red half calf, spines gilt. Lacking "Golden, or Queen of Bavaria's Parrot" plate in vol 3; vol 3 plates with some pale, even toning, text blocks cracked in places, and lower cover nearly detached, numbering-pieces flaking on spine with loss. First edition. "The artist and author combined give the amateur a fine idea of the characteristics of these birds; and Dr. Greene has not omitted from his description how to rear these talkative gentlemen in captivity. Lovers of parrots will find many useful hints in this work, and on this account as well as for the portraits of these pets, we recommend it to our readers" (period review in the Live Stock Journal). The color plates are fine examples of chromoxylography. Ayer 274; Fine Bird Books 79. Provenance: Walter S. Gabler (bookplates); from the library of ornithologist G. Stuart Keith. See illustration.
