Arnold Rosé (1863-1946) was a renowned violinist who made his debut in 1879 at a Leipzig Gewandhaus concert. The Rosé quartet, to which the correspondence refers, was founded in 1883, with R.C.Fischer, A.Rzitska and F.Buxbaum. In the 1880's Rosé became leader of the Vienna court orchestra and at the Bayreuth Wagner festival. The quartet toured extensively and performed nearly up to the time of Rosé 's death in London, where he had come to live at the outbreak of World War II. Ysaÿe visited London on numerous occasions from 1889 until the outbreak of the first world war. Brahms died in Vienna on 7 April 1897 and was buried there. His pall-bearers included his publisher Simrock and Dvorák. (5)
