De Guignes lived in China for 17 years, partly as a French envoy and consul in Canton. He also worked as an interpreter at the Dutch Embassy in Beijing (1794-1795) under the direction of Titsingh and Van Braam. His impressive travelogue tells of his experiences in China, with illustrations based on sketches he made on the spot. De Guignes' narrative offers an interesting and personal perspective on the embassy in Beijing. - He was the son of the distinguished sinologist Joseph de Guignes and correspondent of the Académie des Sciences and the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres. He wrote an important dictionary, the Dictionnaire Chinois-Français et Latin (1813).
