HAGGARD, H. RIDER. Cetywayo and His White Neighbors; or, Remarks on Recent Events in Zululand, Natal, and the Transvaal. London: Trubner 1882. 8vo, original green cloth, stamped in black and gilt, gilt-lettered, unopened, a signature just beginning to start. FIRST EDITION of Haggard's first book, which consisted of 750 copies printed at the author's (and the author's father's expense), PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR'S FATHER, inscribed by him (William Meybohm Haggard) on the half-title: "To Leila Lady Walsingham from W.M. Haggard," with the publisher's slip presenting this copy tipped in before title-page. Scott 1; Sadleir 1082. This title is a critique of the situation in South Africa, where England had recently (1878-9) quelled an uprising of the Zulus led by their king, Cetywayo. Two years after publication only 154 copies of Cetywayo had been sold; but after Haggard became famous with King Solomon's Mines (1885), the rest sold readily. In fine condition.
