HAITI -- A collection of letters and documents relating to Haiti, circa 1792-1846 , comprising: L'OUVERTURE, François-Dominique Toussaint (1746-1803). Four letters signed to Citoyen Laveaux (Governor and General in Chief of Saint-Domingue), Citoyen Hedouville (French commissioner) and another official, Les Verrettes, Le Cap and Port Republicain, '15 nivose l'an 4' - le 23 thermidor l'an 9' [5 January 1796 - 11 August 1801] , on administrative and military matters, including the transportation of munitions, a disciplinary case, the restoration of order in the North, 'J'envoye maintenant un officier, homme probre et aimant l'ordre et desirant la prosperité de la colonie dans les montagnes du pays pourris ... pour ramener les cultivateurs dans l'ordre, les ranger au travail et les y exiter', and referring to an attack by French corsairs on an American vessel, 8½ pages, 4to and folio , (3 letters with printed headings, one letter faded); Four documents signed, two approving applications for leave of absence and two military warrants (1798/9), printed vignette headings, 4 pages, folio , and a copy certified by the French Commissioner, Sonthonax, of a letter by Toussaint l'Ouverture, addressed to French deserters. JEAN-JACQUES, Emperor of Haiti (1804-1806, formerly General Dessalines). Two letters signed, one to the administrator of the parliament of the North, requiring him to make the sum of 900 gourdes available to him, one page, 4to , printed vignette heading, blank leaf, and one (as General Dessalines) to Toussaint l'Ouverture (1802), and two other letters, bound together in a folder. CHRISTOPHE, Henry, King of Haiti (1811-1820). Three letters signed, the first (as President, 'Henry Christophe'), to the Governor of Cap Henry, Palais de Milor, 7 April 1810 , enclosing an order for materials for the work on his palace; two (signed as King, 'Henry') to the Archbishop of Haiti, the Duc de Lanse, Chateau de l'Intermediaire, 1 October, 1816 , complaining that the charges for funerals are too high, and Palais de Sansoucy, 12 November 1814 , on the discovery of secret and perfidious instructions on a French government agent, who has been arrested, and calling for a Te Deum to be sung in the cathedral as an act of thanksgiving, 6 pages, 4to and folio ; PETION, Alexandre, President of Haiti (1807-1818). Letter signed to Colonel Chayler, agreeing to receive the agent of the United Provinces of the United States (1817). BOYER, Jean Pierre, President of Haiti (1818-1843). Four letters signed, agreeing to a request from a mission school, requesting a subscription to an Encyclopaedic Review, agreeing to the appointment of a French Vice-Consul and on customs and imports, 7½ pages, 4to and folio ; twenty-two letters addressed to Monsieur de Cressay, 'Commandant des Troupes Patriotiques au Gros Morne', 1792/3, by various correspondents in Haiti, giving information and views on the current situation, approximately 48 pages, folio ; a document signed by the Duc de Feltre, a printed broadsheet and approximately 16 other items (letters, reports, memoranda etc).
