(H6 and 4C2 with small rust holes catching a few letters.) Contemporary English blind-ruled calf, manuscript paper title label on spine (a few repairs to spine ends, endpapers renewed). Provenance: Christopher Blenîon (signatures on title, marginalia on a few leaves). THE RARE FIRST ISSUE OF THE BOWES LEAVES (2X5-2Y6), WITH SIX UNPAGINATED LEAVES DESCRIBING DRAKE'S CIRCUMNAVIGATION inserted between pages 642 and 643, with blank leaf X4. The map, which is frequently lacking, is based on a combination of Ortelius maps, the central world oval being taken from his third world map of 1587, while the cloud border is from his earlier plates. This map was used later in the 1598 translation of Linschoten's Voyages (see lot 327). "Hakluyt was a vigorous propagandist and empire-builder; his purpose was to further British expansion overseas. He saw Britain's greatest opportunity in the colonization of America, which he advocated chiefly for economic reasons" (Hill 743). The work is, as the title suggests, limited to the exploits of English explorers, but it is nevertheless comprehensive and accurate. The third part concentrates on the exploration of the New World and includes much information about both North and South America.
