AUTOGRAPH DOCUMENT SIGNED IN FULL (WITH PARAPH), CONSISTING OF A CLOSELY-WRITTEN INDENTURE ON PAGE 3 OF A 4-PAGE LEGAL DOCUMENT, N.P., [NEW YORK], 20 JUNE 1804. ONE PAGE, FOLIO, WITH HAMILTON'S ORIGINAL PAPERED SEAL to the right of his signature. Page 4 of the 4-page document bears a 1/2-page autograph deposition signed by Henry Brockholst Livingston, associate Justice of the Supreme Court. A FEW WEEKS BEFORE HIS FATAL DUEL, HAMILTON SELLS A FARM IN NEW JERSEY An interesting document recording a sequence of ownership of the property in question. Page l and 2 consist of an indenture, dated 30 April 1803, by which Ann Pierce sells "unto the said Alexander Hamilton," a parcel of land "on the south side of the Raritan River in the county of Somerset in the State of New Jersey, about a mile and a half above the town of Brunswick," consisting of a farm, lands, houses...and appurtenances," with its "woods, ways, waters, watercourses"; Hamilton is authorized to "grant, bargain, sell and convey the said lands to any person, for the best price that can be got for the same, at auction or otherwise," and apply the funds obtained to the settlement of a note of Nathaniel Pendleton, Alexander Hamilton and John Bard Hamilton's 30-line indenture on page 3, which contains his name in full no fewer than five times, is dated a few weeks prior to his well known duel with Burr (on July 11, Pendleton was his second). Hamilton records a contract between "Alexander Hamilton of the City of New York, Counsellor at Law...and Charles Wilkes of the same City," in which the Pierce farm on the Raritan River, "together with all and singular the buildings, improvements, easements, privileges, rights, members and appurtenances..." is sold to Wilkes for an undisclosed sum. At the end, Hamilton asserts "that he has done no act, matter or thing whereby the premises hereby bargained and sold can be charged or incumberedor the title or Estate therin defeated." Hamilton's contract is witnessed and signed at the bottom by Thomas L. Ogden. The attestation by Henry Brockholst Livingston (1757-1823), associate justice of the Supreme Court of the Unites States, which appears on page 4 is dated 8 December 1818, fourteen years after Hamilton's death. Livingstone certifies that Ogden, known to him, has appeared before him and "being duly sworn did say that he saw Alexander Hamilton execute the deed written on the other side." Livingston also certifies the authenticity of the other signatures on the document, Pierce's and Wilkes's.
