Hancock writes this letter to Major General Lincoln (1733-1810) announcing the promotion of his aide, William Donnison (1757?-1834) to Adjutant General of the Massachusetts Militia, with Israel Keith (1750-1819) serving under him. After a distinguished career during the Revolutionary War, including serving under Horatio Gates at Saratoga and receiving Cornwallis' sword at Yorktown, Lincoln led the Massachusetts Militia at the suppression of Shay's Rebellion, which occurred not long before this letter's date.
