Autograph Letter Signed ("John Hancock"), 1 p, 4to, Boston, April 2, 1788, to Major General Benjamin Lincoln, announcing the appointment of William Donnison as Adjutant General and Israel Keith as Vice-AG, with ALS of Donnison to Lincoln at lower margin expounding on the appointment, with integral address leaf, leaves moderately toned, small loss to address leaf at seal, generally very good. Hancock writes this letter to Major General Lincoln (1733-1810) announcing the promotion of his aide, William Donnison (1757?-1834) to Adjutant General of the Massachusetts Militia, with Israel Keith (1750-1819) serving under him. After a distinguished career during the Revolutionary War, including serving under Horatio Gates at Saratoga and receiving Cornwallis' sword at Yorktown, Lincoln led the Massachusetts Militia at the suppression of Shay's Rebellion, which occurred not long before this letter's date.
