Jean Hancock, President au Congres des XIII. Provinces unies d'Amerique né à Boston .
London: Thomas Hart circa 1776. Mezzotint, stated to be after a painting by “Jean Wilckinson a Boston,” wide margins (8 ¾ x 6 ¼ inches, 220x155 mm). Strong impression. Matted. lovely mezzotint portrait of founding father john hancock Public curiosity for prints of leaders of the Revolution was not limited to America but spread to the English and European print shops, where an inquisitive audience clamored for a glimpse of the key figures in the war. To this end, London publisher Thomas Hart issued a series of mezzotints of important American figures. At the time of this portrait, Hancock served as the President of the Continental Congress. This lovely image is a slightly reduced version of another British portrait of Hancock by C. Corbutt. That print is based on John Singleton Copley's famous seated portrait of Hancock and is one few prints from the time to be based on an actual sitting. We can find no biographical information on Jean Wilckinson, who is stated on the print as the artist, but it seems likely that this refers to Copley. See Fowble, Two Centuries of Prints in America 61-63; Cresswell, The American Revolution in Drawings and Prints 102-109; Russell, English Mezzotint Portraits 5a.
