Beschreibung:

MOULE, THOMAS. Winkles's Architectural and Picturesque Illustrations of the Cathedral Churches of England and Wales.... London: Tilt and Bogue, n.d., 1838-1842. 3 volumes. Large 8vo. With engraved additional titles and copious engraved views and plans after Robert Garland Original cloth, spines gilt-lettered. Scattered foxing, vol 1 with narrow marginal dampstain at top, vol 3 toned, bindings well-worn with spine cloth coming detached (crudely taped on vol 2). Provenance: John Lawrell (armorial bookplate in vol 3); Morton W. Cokayne [1866-1894] (ownership inscriptions dated 1887 in vol 1 & 2); THOMAS HARDY (signed in all 3 volumes; Max Gate bookplate in vols 1 & 3). THOMAS HARDY'S COPY: ON THE CATHEDRALS OF ENGLAND. An important association in view of Hardy's early career as an architect specializing in church restoration and the influence this experience had on his writing of Jude the Obscure. It is possible that Hardy acquired these volumes around the time he was writing Jude as it seems the previous owner died in 1894 and Jude was published in 1895. Hardy's library was dispersed at auction in 1937 after the death of his second wife.
