Photograph Signed ("T.H.") and Inscribed, 5 3/4 by 4 inch silver gelatin print, mounted and framed, inscribed by Hardy, apparently for his brother Henry, along lower edge of photograph: "H.H. from T.H. / Xmas 1913." Thomas Hardy was the eldest of four siblings: Mary, Henry and Katherine. Henry took on their father's occupation as a builder and it was he who built Hardy's home, Max Gate, to Hardy's design. Henry and his two sisters lived at Talbothays, another Dorset villa designed by Thomas and built by Henry. In 1913, the brothers journeyed together to St Juliot, the youthful home of Hardy's estranged wife Emma (died in 1912; ODNB).
