HASTED, William (1732-1812). The History and Topographical Survey of the County of Kent. Canterbury: Simmons and Kirby for the Author, 1778-1799. 4 volumes extended to 15, 2° (420 x 285mm). Large folding engraved county map, hand-coloured in outline, 35 double-page or folding maps of the 'hundreds', 64 plates, plans, charts or views (5 double-page or folding). EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with 15 calligraphic manuscript titles and approximately 2,875 plates, maps, views, watercolours, manuscript material and printed ephemera, the majority mounted to size, some loosely inserted. (13 of the required plates mounted to size, cut down or with small neat repairs.) Early-20th century red/brown morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, covers with single outer gilt fillet and banding outlined in blind with decorative terminals of stylised foliage, spines in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in gilt in the second. third and fourth, the others bordered with a single gilt fillet, gilt turn-ins, upper and lower covers to original boards bound at front and rear of appropriate volumes, top edges gilt (some discolouration to spines, occasional very light scuffing). Provenance : Fane (?compilor, ALS from Hugh Jackson addressed to 'My dear Fane', dated 7/4/1919, bound in to vol.II part 2); John Burns (manuscript note of purchase, June 1937, with two associated invoices from Thomas Thorp, noting a price of £ 175); W.A.Foyle (pencilled note at front of vol.I part 1, dated 26/4/1944, noting a price of £ 250). FIRST EDITION, CAREFULLY EXPANDED AND BEAUTIFULLY PRESENTED WITH AN EXTENSIVE SELECTION OF RELEVANT VIEWS, PORTRAITS, ORIGINAL WATERCOLOURS AND OTHER EPHEMERAL ITEMS OF KENT. The extra-illustrations include printed works by Morden, Blome, Stockdale, John Bowles Samuel and Nathaniel Buck John Harris; watercolours from J.P. Neale and others, and autograph material from Hasted and various Kent wothies. The images include over 2,000 views and plates (the majority mounted to size, with about 150 hand-coloured plates), about 650 portraits (the majority mounted to size, including about 70 mezzotints), about 50 maps, 116 ORIGINAL WATERCOLOURS OR PENCIL DRAWINGS, 9 manuscript items (including a letter from Hasted concerning the present work) and 12 printed ephemeral items (including broadsides, tradesman's flyers and invitations).
