HAYDON, Benjamin Robert (1786-1846). 6 autograph letters, five signed ('B.R. Haydon'), c.1820-1836 : to Mr. Allatt, St. Johns Place, Ligon Grove Park, 'Wednesday' , asking him to defer the bill for ¨50, 'You are aware that I was nearly six years finishing my large Picture [Christ's Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem, finished in early 1820] -- I did nothing else in the mean time, and have a great deal to pay off now it is finished'; to [Peter Geroge] Patmore, n.p., 13 June 1825 , thanking him for a review in the New Monthly Magazine of his Solomon , ' if I have not painted any other picture as good as this; it is not my fault, Nature's fault, or the fault of the Public; but the Apathy of the Patrons, who hated me'; to an unknown correspondent, n.p., 27 July 1835 , insisting he had 'a right, to be allowed to subscribe 5.5 -- to this Statue ... you will be happy when I too, have a handsome commission'; two to T[homas] Campbell, 1833-6 , one written from prison, 14 September 1836 , 'After a desperate struggle -- here I am again ... Your debt is a debt of the strictest honor and the reason I have not paid it, is, the perpetual pressure of law expenses ... Do not join in any abuse of me it is unjust ... I have paid to the utmost of my power ... &, raised a pound on my coat ... for food'; also one (unsigned) to Campbell, partly in Italian, with pen drawing of a foot, together 11 pages, various sizes .
