HAZLITT, William (1778-1830). Autograph letter signed ('W. Hazlitt') to Peter George Patmore, Westminster, 4 February, 1819 , writing about 'the Course of Lectures which I had it in contemplation to propose through you to the Committe for next year on the Age & Literature of Q. Elizabeth would fall nearly into the following divisions', outlining the topics of the eight lectures, 'If the foregoing sketch should be approved of, I shall be happy to set to work upon the Lectures almost immediately', 2½ pages, 4to , address panel on verso of second leaf, (two large tears from seal in the second leaf, one in the blank portion, the other causing some loss of the date). Patmore (1786-1855) was secretary of the Surrey Institution, where Hazlitt had already given a course of six lectures on the English poets in 1818. It was then they first met. Subsequently Patmore became one of Hazlitt's most intimate friends. The Lectures on the Dramatic Literature of the Age of Elizabeth were published in 1821. Published in The Letters of William Hazlitt ed. H.M. Sikes, no.83 from Complete Works ed. Howe, vol.VI, p.385.
