An exquisite work derived from the "Dijian tushuo", known as "The emperor's mirror" a popular Chinese ensamble of stories of the praiseworthy and blameworthy actions of Chinese emperors. The plates are engraved from the designs of Jean Denis Attiret (1702-1768) a Jesuit missionary and painter appreciated by the chinese elite and by the emperor himself, who gave him the title of Mandarin. 4to (268 x 200mm). Engraved title, dedication with engraved head-piece, plates numbered 1-24 and 24 leaves of text (light browning, light marginal spotting). Contemporary calf, title on spine label (some wear, front panel detached).
