HEMINGWAY, ERNEST]. Rolleiflex MX (type 2) camera no. 1405220. Franke and Heidecke, Germany; 120-rollfilm, with a Heidosmat f/2.8 75 mm. Viewing lens and a Zeiss-Opton Tessar 75 mm. F/3.5 taking lens no. 1067254 in a Synchro-Compur shutter. Provenance : From the Estate of Mary and Ernest Hemingway (auction sale at Tepper Galleries Inc., New York, 16 May 1987, with photocopy letter of provenance). The Rolleiflex MX was produced in the serial number range 1,267,000-1,427,999 between June 1951 and March 1954. This was one of Franke and Heidecke's most popular models. The Rolleiflex twin lens reflex camera was introduced in 1929 and was the most successful of all the twin lens reflex cameras made. Final production was discontinued in the early 1990s. The camera was popular with serious amateur photographers during the 1950s and 1960s, particularly in Europe. Arthur Evans, Collectors Guide to Rollei Cameras (Hove Foto Books, 1986), pp. 112-113.
