HENRY PIERCE BONE (BRITISH, 1779-1855), AFTER JOHN HOSKINS (BRITISH, C. 1590-1665) Lady Bankes, née Mary Hawtrey (d. 1661), in widow's dress, gauze veil, pearl necklace, holding the keys to Corfe Castle, Dorset, in her right hand; landscape background with Corfe Castle in the distance Signed, dated and inscribed in full on the counter-enamel 'Mary, Wife of Lord Ch. J. Bankes. She defended / Corfe Castle for 2 Years against the Parliamentary / Forces, with a Garrison never exceeding 40 & / on one occasion with 5 men only, she herself & / her female attendants taking part in the Defence. / The keys were never given up, and with the Miniature / by J. Hoskins 1656, from which this is Painted / are now in the possession of W. J. Bankes / London May 1837. Painted for J. P. Ord Esq / by Henry Pierce Bone Enaml Paintr. to her Majesty ' Enamel on copper Rectangular, 130 x 104 mm., gilt-metal mount engraved 'Enamel. H. P. Bone.' within giltwood frame
